The current gallery exhibit at Eugene Textile Center is Katazome Stencils
This is a spectacular collection of antique Japanese stencils for producing katazome cloth. It is generously loaned to us for exhibition in the Eugene Textile Center Gallery by Karen Miller, a contemporary katazome artist. Katazome is a Japanese method of dyeing fabric using a resist paste applied through a stencil. The word comes from kata (pattern or stencil) and –zome, from the verb someru, to dye. It is a resist technique based on the principle that any part of the cloth that is covered with the rice paste will resist, or block, subsequently applied dye. The Japanese have developed katazome to a degree of sophistication unmatched elsewhere in the world.
This show will be on display through March 15. Visit the gallery Monday to Saturday, 10AM to 6PM.
