Sashiko Ori with Beth Johnson
Description:
With Beth Ross Johnson
Sashiko-ori or Woven Sashiko challenges weavers to think about design in a different way as they learn to control the intersections of pattern and thread in the warp and weft.
Identified as a supplementary warp and weft structure, these textiles, based on the hitomezashi style of sashiko, can be woven from a single warp. Stitching can be added later to produce diagonal lines or areas of interest.
Students will learn about designing sashiko-ori, beam looms with warps provided by the instructor, and thread their looms with a pattern of their own choice or design. A slide show on the history of this technique and opportunities for stitching will be presented when students need a break from threading or weaving.
Students should have experience threading their looms and reading a draft.
